Kari Soinio: D1, sarjasta A Way by Numbers
A Way by Numbers is a landscape project based on personal geography and cartography. The codes along the route between home and the studio form waypoints that can be used for navigation. The series creates a route map, similar to those used by Caesar’s army or by pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. In the early Middle Ages, maps were primarily route descriptions: distances, intersections, and overnight stops—much like the guide maps for drivers in the early 20th century.
About the artist
Kari Soinio is a Helsinki-based photographer and video artist. His best-known works focus on the depiction of men and masculinity, as well as the meanings and representation of landscape and place. He has explored perception and vision through the use of blur.
He has often challenged the form of photography with curved, oval, and circular solutions. The essence and meanings of landscape, as well as the conventions of representing it, have long been central to his work. He has also examined the significance of place for identity, changes and inequality in the built environment, and temporality in photography.
