The series Arkkihedelmä is like the climax of the water-lily’s performance. Alanen has captured an unexpected scene: the plant shoots its red seeds into its surroundings while holding its form together with its last remaining strength. The firework-like moment is like the plant’s final cry. The process of dying gives rise to new life.

Ulla-Maija Alanen observes the underwater world by breathing in sync with the water and its plants. She has been photographing Finnish forest lakes for 15 years. In her works, the growth, flourishing, and withering of water lilies appear as vivid presences and quiet reflections.
