The photograph depicts the artist’s favorite beach in California, where they are from. They reprinted it while on a residency in Norway with the Nordic Analog Network. This is a colour negative printed in black and white. In 2003, it won the top photography prize at the Ocean Institute in Laguna Beach, California.

About the artist
Juliana Irene Smith (b. 1977 San Francisco, lives in Helsinki, Finland) is a half Iranian, half Californian artist who works with generational trauma through material memory, photography, text and installation. Prior to moving permanently to Finland in 2017, she lived in Cape Town with her artists-run non-profit ALMA MARTHA. She has a BFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design in New York and a Masters in Public Art from the University of Applied Arts and Sciences in Lucerne, Switzerland.
