Miia Autio: Dear Anna,
In 1843, Anna Atkins, an English botanist, published the first book illustrated with photographs, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. Atkins obtained the paper that she used for her scientific illustrations from a local paper manufacturing company, Whatman. The paper making technique developed by James Whatman had once enabled the industrialization of paper manufacturing but today, only filter papers for scientific research are produced under the Whatman trademark. In her work Dear Anna, Miia Autio uses scientific Whatman filter paper and the historical cyanotype process. By thinking about Anna Atkins, Autio explores the entanglement of images, information and existence in the course of history.
Each book is signed and numbered and includes four original syanotype prints on Whatman filter paper.
